Get This Seasons Trend - How to Turn a Jar Into a Home Accessorie

I'm sure you've seen the cute glass pots, filled with cotton wool or Q-Tips, matchsticks and other household accessories.

It's the current trend. But my goodness these cute little pots are quite expensive.

So this led to my latest hack

I wanted to do a budget version of the beautiful jar on the right.

I found some long matchsticks that fitted well into a normal food jar.

I gave it a good wash. And using sugar soap to cleaned the lid of any grease.

I put a sandwich bag over the jar before putting the lid on. This was to protect the glass. It was easier to paint when the lid was screwed on.

I primed the lid with some primer.

Using a primer that would work on metal services.

I used thin layers of the primer to create a good base.

Try not to paint on too thick as this will make the lid look bulky later on.

I chose a light grey/blue by Rust-Oleum but this was not compatible with the metal, even having used the primer first.

As you can see once it has dried there were cracks in the paint.

Sadly this attempt had not gone to plan. But I didn't give up.

I went straight into Amazon for some paint that would be a better fit with the metal lid.

Sanding back my work. I started again. This time with a paint compatible with a metal lid.

I chose this vivid blue by kobra.

This was much better.

Once or was dry. The matchsticks went in and on display in my kitchen.

This paint did the trick.

removing the bag between the glass and lid. I then filled it with the matchsticks.

And put it in my kitchen on display.

I think I’m going to make a little family of them now for a display.

What do you strike your matches on ? I have mine in their box that fits inside an ornamental metal box. My second son bought it at Santa Land in 1st grade. It is almost 40 yrs. old. now. It is on the wall next to my stove. Just wondering?
