Can you recommend a dining set for a family of six?

We need to replace our dining set, but I’m not sure what the best option would be. I don’t need to go with the cheapest option. I’m trying to figure out what the best option would be in the long run. I haven’t had any luck with thrift stores. I am prioritizing function over flats in dadar fashion. We are a household of 6. The kids are 10, 5, and 3 year old twins. Easy clean up is important. Our space is somewhat limited, so I am looking for something that doesn’t waste as much space. We also have two shedding dogs, so ease of mopping is important. I like the idea of being able to stack the chairs. I also like being able to expand the table to seat 8 as needed, but it’s not a necessity.I started looking at IKEA, but I am worried that it won’t hold up to daily use by 4 kids. I’m also worried that the chairs will be too small for large bodied adults.

Back in the day, we liked the “Booth” look (as in a restaurant). Build (or have someone else build) two (large?) rectangular boxes with lids, add a foam top for them with coordinating fabric, as well as cushions for your backs. Have a tabletop that attaches to the wall. Thus you have seats, storage and a table. Worked for us!

I have had an Ikea dining table for several years and it is holding up just fine. It has withstood 5 military moves and children who are now 5 and 6. It has been a great surface for dining and art projects, play doh, etc. For chairs, go to the store and make sure you sit in them comfortably before you make a decision. Good luck on your shopping!

We have a drop leaf table with two additional leaves. With the sides up and the leaves in it seats 8. We bought it at a consignment store, painted it white and bought new chairs.

Check out antique stores for a 1950's kitchen table and chairs. They were long lasting and sturdy. Easy to clean as well.

Have you consignment stores in your area?
