First, remove any trim or metal strips around the steps. It's possible that the trim may be nailed in and will have to be removed with a pry bar. Next, pull the carpet away - it may be stapled in place or held with carpet tack strips, then remove any staples or tacks. If the stairs are made from solid wood, the holes left from the staples or tacks will need to be filled and sanded. If the stairs are made from plywood or OSB, they will need to be covered with something such as wood flooring. I hope this helps!

I’ve spent a year doing this project.
The stair treads should be 2x10’s, framing pine.
What took me a year was to try to “turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse”. Even if you sand them baby butt smooth & fill all the holes, they’re still pine and they will never wear like oak. Pine is too soft.
Instead, I’m putting luxury vinyl tile “faux oak” planks on them with a 1/4”x2” solid oak stair nosing on them, stained to match.
Real oak planks with an integral bullnose edge are $28-$45 each, depending on how wide the stairs are.
I have about $10 in each tread.
If you opt for a pine edging, then have it flush with the LVT, so that people don’t snags the LVT with their shoes.

Ours was stapled in to the stairs so we just removed the staples
