I have painted on liquid starch and let it set for a dew min. Wash off..
Original Dawn dish detergent removes grease like nothing else will. TSP is a good prep if you're painting the cabinets.
I found Krud Kutter in my local supermarket......economically priced and EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE. Spray it on, let it sit a minute or so and wipe down with clean rags wrung it hot water. THE BEST!!!!!
