Front Door Fall Decor Ideas: Corn Husks and Pumpkins

Before I show you how to decorate a front door for fall, it's important to make sure you have the right materials at hand to create the perfect fall front door decorations. To make the whole process is simple and fast, it's important to prep everything before you start. Here's what I used: 

• A small bag of concrete mix. You can buy these for a few bucks at Home Depot.
• A bunch of corn husks. We used a couple dozen for this project, but you can use fewer or more depending on the size of your display and the level of detail you want. You can pick up dried husks at farms or garden centers, sometimes even for free.
• A reel of easy-cut Hobby Lobby floral wire.
• Two lengths of PVC piping, which should be sized to fit the length and width of your doorway. 
• A multicolored reel of satin ribbon. 
• Some faux leaf garland. I opted for some silk faux eucalyptus, but you can choose anything that works. 
• A bundle of dried natural wheat sheaves. 
• A plastic pot that is strong enough to hold dry cement. 

Step 1: Gather Your Materials 

Now it's time to step outside and get started! To start off, gather all your materials listed above on the front porch. You'll want to place your plastic pot by the side of the door, on the side where the hinge is. Lay out all of your corn husks and decorations in the order you're going to use them in, as well as your pipes, a drill, a bucket of water, and your floral wire. 

Step 2: Fill Your Pot with Concrete 

I started my fall front door decor journey by filling up the plastic pot with the concrete mix. This is so that the corn husk archway decor will stay supported through the fall season. Concrete is ideal as it will ensure that your decorations will stay standing no matter what the elements throw at them. 

Step 3: Stick a PVC Pipe in the Concrete 

Next up is to place your vertical PVC piping in the concrete and then you pour your water over the mixture. You'll want to completely submerge the mixture to ensure that it hardens properly into cement. Once you have done this, it may take a couple of hours to dry, so make sure the pipe can stand on its own if you leave it unsupervised. 

Step 4: Create Support for the PVC Pipe on Your Door 

After the concrete had dried, it was time to tether the PVC piping to the door frame. This would form the foundations of my fall front door decorations. I glued some plastic hooks to the top of the door frame, as this is what the horizontal section of PVC piping will rest on. I also drilled a small hole in the piping for the hooks to slot into. 

Step 5: Attach the Corn Husks

Once your upside-down L-shape PVC pipe is all set up around your front door, it's time to start decorating! I gathered my corn husks and used the floral wire to tie each husk to the piping, moving up and along until the entire frame was covered in husks. That's really all there is to it! 

Step 6: Decorate the Corn Husks 

Now comes my favorite part, decorating the corn husks. For this, it's time to break out your florals and garnishes and really get creative. Again, the floral wire should do the trick when you're tying plants and flowers to the husks, but you can also use the ribbons for a touch of extra color. You may also find that some items simply slide in between the corn husks and stay supported on their own. 

Step 7: Decorate the Rest of Your Front Door 

After I finished my corn husk feature, I decided to complete the look by adding some extra decorations around my porch. For this, you can choose virtually anything that fits your desired aesthetic, but I opted for a festive pumpkin feature to balance out the 'empty' side of the door. 

By following these steps you can easily decorate your front door for fall. The benefit of a project like this one is that it has a huge visual impact for your home at a very low cost. It's also a fun way to spend a brisk fall afternoon, one that you will create cherished memories forever.
