  • Dig it out is your best bet. Just be vigilant and over time you will be able to get rid of it.

    Wear heavy gloves, and have a sharp edged tool with you to dig out root runners, which can be upwards of 6' in length.

    Cheryl's article is very good, but I have two comments. Ladies--do not pull up those tough ivy roots yourself. You will hurt your back! If you are lucky, it will be only be temporary-- a few sleepless nights and lots of Motrin. More likely you can do some real damage. Get some manpower to do this difficult job. I have used a combination of Brush Be Gone and Round-Up with a few drops of Dawn added to the sprayer. The Dawn dissolves the oily stuff on the leaf surface allowing penetration of the chemicals. The top layer will die off, then reapply. This usually gets into the roots and kills it.
