How do I white wash a brick fireplace?

The brick fireplace in our den is awful after 50 years. The den is paneled in medium dark paneling. We painted the other side of the brick fireplace that is in the dining area of our kitchen yellow which looks really nice. Wondering how to paint or white wash this side of the brick fireplace.
