    Hi Debra I would sand the polyurethane object finish first to give the paint some base to adhere to . Then paint .

    Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer, then paint.

    I agree with William, here. The Kilz will provide a tooth for your paint.

    You can use Heirloom Traditions Paint and not have to sand! It has a good tooth to it (plus has a top coat in it). All you have to do is clean the piece before painting. Go to Heirloom Traditions Paint.com.

    Chalk paint or a mineral based paint with go over poly!! :) Annie Sloan, Jolie, Dixie Belle all work great for this type of a project!
