Depends on the plant if it is a Butterfly milkweed plant a Monarch butterfly will lay eggs on it then they become a caterpillar which it will then eat the leaves and then turn into a Monarch butterfly and it will not destroy the plant it will reproduce leaves in time or in the spring again.

The milkweed plant is their favorite plant to do this. Does it get orange or yellow flowers on it. It is not the flowers but this plant is their favorite.

What plant? Describe the caterpillar. There are way too many to guess.

We all need to reduce our use of pesticides and herbicides. We poison the bugs and then the birds which eat the bugs.
