You can kill insects with salt, but the birds should be alright. The salt will kill your plants, though.

Hi Jane, I am a chemist here to help :) Epsom salt is not a good addition for a weed killer as it is not really salt, but magnesium sulfate. Table salt is what should be added to a homemade weed killer. As far as the ecosystem, it is much safer than store-bought options. If you use the correct recipe ratios, it is safe for everything. Epsom salts help your plants, it does not kill them. Many gardeners add it to their soil to furnish the magnesium sulfate (which is what it actually is) that plants need. You mean actual table salt. If you use table salt, just know that nothing will re-grow there for a long, long time.
