How do I affix glitter to acrylic tipped pinecones?

How do I affix glitter to pinecones that have been 'snowtipped' with acrylic paint so that the glitter stays on but the pinecones don't feel tacky?

Water down some elmers blue paint it where the acrylic paint is and the carefully roll the pine.come in a plate of glitter then shake it off and set to dry . When it's dry spray it with varethane to keep the glitter in place.
