I want to block up the open space of a fireplace. Any suggestions?

Glass block are pretty and would be easy to close up the opening.

You can put a piece of lattice over the opening and use it like a trellis for climbing vines/flowers.

Make sure you've capped it off on roof so you don't get leaks. Frame in with plywood and either hang a painting or do a painting on it.
