Linda....I have just used Kilz alone but sand to adhere.
I used Zinsser 1 2 3 or you can use any primer, and then an exterior latex paint. worked well for me and that was 2 years ago in Florida.
A good stain-blocking primer would be a great start, then paint whatever color you'd like and enjoy.
Anything could be painted just paint the color you don’t like
