Why does my first coat of chalk paint have a yellow blotchiness?
I am using Behr chalk paint for my daughter's head and foot boards. After the first coat, I am excited to move to the next step. But, I noticed as it dried, there is a yellow blotchiness in some areas. I actually sanded it down almost to bare wood before painting because it is a very old piece that had very glossy maple stain. Will the next coat cover this or should I do something else before moving on?

It could be tannin in the wood bleeding thru or you didn't mix the paint good before applying. You could apply a coat of stain blocker before doing the last coat of chalk paint. I used chalk paint on some factory stained chairs (the cheap top coat stain) and had to go back and prime because it was not covering. You could also go to the AS website and post this question. I have heard that their customer service is fantastic.
You always need to Prime stained furniture first. Go back and prime with Kilz or the old finish will continue to float to surface.
I did sand most of it down to bare wood, just the spindles had some stain left. But, I will stop & prime before moving on. Thank you again!
Just a suggestion---Use Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer. You can use the can...but I would use spray primer. Since you have spindles, the job would be much easier. BIN covers up all bleed-through, no matter what the cause. Good luck!
I know it has been a long time since I asked this question, but I wanted to update that I did a coat of kilz primer & then another coat of chalk paint. So happy with how it turned out!
