If the DIY methods don't work, "Whink" is a rust remover for fabrics.

Whether the rust in on the buttons or the sweater, I suggest you remove the buttons to make cleaning easier. Soak the sweater in a sink of warm water with 1/4 cup of white vinegar and a tablespoon of Dawn or Woolite. Gently squeeze the suds through the sweater. Rub any stained areas, again gently, to release the stains. (Older stains require more scrubbing. ) rinse the sweater with cold water for at least five minutes, squeeze out the water, and dry the sweater on white towels or in your preferred method. Meanwhile, place the buttons in a bowl of warm water, 1/4 cup of white vinegar, 1/4 cup of salt, and 1/4 cup of baking soda. When the foaming stops, add a small squirt of Dawn. Let the buttons soak until the water starts getting dirty from rust. Then is the time to scrub each button with an old soft toothbrush, back and front. Dip down into the salt in the bowl because that is your abrasive. You can use this method with metal, plastic, or china buttons. Rinse and dry the buttons completely, then secure them to the dried sweater again. If metal, it wouldn’t hurt to give each one with a coat of clear Rustoleum sealer or any kind of button with clear fingernail polish. I really hope this solves your rust problem. Jewell
