Heaven! Anything on a stick is glory to me! Seashell turtles, painted crab shells, stone owls, steak, marshmallows, Twinkies, polyester leaves—anything. If you find the Limb of the Year in your woods, a a bunch of small twigs, or a birds nest, or a non poisonous vine, or small evergreen branches, you have the makings of five month’s decorations. I’m hoping you might also have ferns, colored leaves, and a Christmas tree, as well as hard berries of any color, and acorns and/or pine cones. Start in Sept. if that is Autumn for you (in late October we have finally had two cool days, in the 50s F). In September, a large full wreath on the door is a festive change from summer or patriotic decor. In October, add corn sheaves or a small bale of hay (craft and home decor stores) to at least one outdoor corner, plus whatever you like for Halloween or Harvest, indoors and out. Don’t forget the power of a bunch of Autumn leaves. Replant a couple of wood ferns to pots for your house. November, add pumpkins and gourds, some used as planters, and clean any large limbs of dead bark, extra branches, and insects (keep outside at least a week while cleaning). If berries are available, bring branches in for drying, and buy cranberries. In December, overload on pine branches, more berries, ferns and more gourds. If you like gold accents, dry whatever natural materials you want to spray gold, or gilt with gold leaf. Your Christmas tree and other decorations, whether natural or man made, should coordinate throughout your house. Don’t forget a Christmas/Winter wreath. Whenever you take the natural materials out of the house, Santa goes. I usually go blue and white snowmen for January, in an ironic bow to our tornadoes and hail in Texas. If we actually have snow, even in March, the snowmen come back out all month. Ideas to consider:Santa and sleigh on a bare limb with fairy lightsCranberry-filled cylinder vasesMedium and tall candles (LED or real) in several lantern globes with gold berry stems and acornsA pyramid of metallic painted pine cones, to fit any square space you haveAdding a tiny bow to as many ornaments and other places as you wish; I would probably choose blue bows to make sure no one misses the theme. Mans look at the hundreds of others on Hometalk and Pinterest. Keep the woodsy theme going until Spring, when you might change to flowers or gardens. Have a great year! Jewell
  • Hi Shirley - This is a great all-natural way to "bleach" pinecones without the harmful bleach chemicals! It only takes a few minutes of hands-on time. Hope this helps with some inspiration. Hugs, Holly
