You need to use stripper to remove old finish using a dull putty knife. Get balance off with 000 steel wool and stripper. Wash down with lacquer thinner. Lightly sand once all finish is off with 220 or higher sand paper. Add new finish.
First, carefully go over every inch of the surface. Make note of all scratches, missing parts, etc. Make sure the veneer isn't damaged through and that it's still securely glued on. You can re-glue but you can't fix missing veneer.
I use CitriStrip as it's non-toxic. Paint on all surfaces liberally and cover the entire piece with plastic overnight. It works best if the plastic is right on the stripper.
Line a garbage can with a plastic bag, use a straight edged stripper and don't dig into the surface. Scrape the gunk into the can. Apply fresh stripper anywhere it's dried out and continue, using a toothbrush or steel wool in corners and crevices. Wipe it down with mineral spirits.
Sanding is the tricky part. Don't sand so aggressively that you penetrate the veneer! I know you can do it! 😎
