Check You Tube videos. We did most of our previous house, but called in a pro for the final spaces when we were getting ready to sell house. Also, check for asbestos with a kit you can buy for a few $$. Depending on the age of the house (when popcorn was cool), there may be asbestos in the mix. We found some in the sheetrock joint compound when some walls had to be repaired.

If they have never been painted they will scrape and wash off but you will probably have to have the ceiling skim coated smooth once the dirty part is done. You can also just hang 1/2 drywall over it and screw directly in ceiling joists with longer screws.

Most people spray a vinegar & water solution on it and scrape it off.

This is very tedious and to Ken’s point, it will reveal unforeseen conditions.

Since my ceilings were sprayed Gunite, then I filled them in with drywall “mud”, as one can’t scrape off concrete.

Cover and protect as much as possible, walls/floors/yourself. Saturate with warm water and scrape with the Homax 6100 ceiling texture scraper.

Removing it can be messy and generally includes hot water of some sort to soften it. Of course you need to know that it's not asbestos before you attempt it on your own. After it's removed it might need a skimcoat of drywall plaster to smooth out any seams.
