Pleather is a short-term fix at best.

Auto parts stores sell vinyl repair kits, that work very well.

To reupholster takes a lot of fabric and skill. You may it cheaper to just replace. Check out you tube videos on how to reupholster a sofa to see if it's what you want to tackle

If your furniture is well built, have it reupholstered. Yes, upholstery fabric can be expensive plus labor cost; however, new quality-built furniture is also expensive. Call and discuss the project with local upholstery businesses.

Doing the upholstery work yourself can be simple or complicated, depending on the item. Upholstery with simple square lines is easier than upholstering curved pieces or those with tufting. Solid color fabric requires the least amount of fabric. Small prints, narrow stripes, irregular patterns and prints require less fabric. Stripes or patterns that must be matched from one cushion to the next will require the most fabric. You don't want stripes on a cushion to not line up with the front top and bottom of the sofa. These include large prints and any regularly repeated patterns. See the photos below. Creating matching cording for the edges of cushions and such requires extra yardage. Here is a link showing the ranges of required yardage. https://w9yards.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/upholstery-chart.jpg

Once you have the new fabric you can remove the old fabric from your sofa and use it as a pattern. Simply pin it to the back side of the new fabric and trace around it. First, though, look for articles and videos on upholstery work. Not every sofa is done the same way, so it's not possible to give you step-by-step instructions. The more you read and watch the more you will understand about the process.

An inexpensive alternative is slipcovers. Those with separate covers for the cushions work much better than the one-piece stretch types. Those tend to move when sat upon, meaning one has to readjust them almost daily.

The cost for upholstery might not be budget friendly unless you’re going to use something like a painters dropcloth. It may not be worth your time and trouble to recover. Have you considered looking at consignment shop thrift stores or craigslist for a replacement piece of furniture? There’s often very good value there.
