Here is a great post for mold on a wood ceiling. I would try to do some additional investigation work. There is a good chance there is a lot of mold under the ceiling and it may need to be professionally dealt with.
Clean area -improve air circulation and reduce moisture will help solve a reoccurring problem after its cleared up.
I recently discovered some mold and mildew on my garage walls. I cleaned it off with an Bleach bathroom spray and moved things around for better air circulation. A dehumidifier might be suggested ifits a significant humidity problem or if a bathroom issue—install an exhaust fan.
