The first thing you want to do is check your local building codes for distance between wood and fire place opening. Keep in mind that wood NEVER goes near the opening.

You will want to put marble, tile, or any non-flammable material between the wood and the opening...and NEVER put wood on the hearth!

Once the non-flammable area is defined, you only need to put up a thin strip of molding or one of those tile molding strips to continue.
