Yes, you can use either latex or oil paint, but not oil over latex. So if the polyurethane on your floors is latex, no, but oil yes.

    Hi JoAnn,

Yes you can paint over oil-based polyurethane floor. As Emily said, you can use either oil or latex paint. I'd rough up the polyurethane with a light sanding and also use a primer to help paint stick. Wishing you the best.

This is the first floor I painted and did use oil poly which did yellow. I no longer use any poly because it is just as easy to repaint color. I have at least six painted floors in my home and many are many years old. If you had a very intricate design I guess polying would make sense!

Hi JoAnn, yes but with careful preparations, you can paint over finished wood in your home and update its look. It requires some patient sanding and oil-based paint products to adhere to the plastic and polyurethane finishes on wood and commercial wood furniture.. Here is a link that may help you

You would need to sand the poly to roughen the surface. Prime the floor with a good primer. Usually two coats. Then you can paint.
