Digging out is best. Over time you will eventually get it all out. Any poison you spray will render the ground infertile for a period of time and not exactly good for the environment or wildlife.
Spectracide is a non-selective herbicide that will kill any vegetation contacted and DOES NOT contaminate the soil. You can plant the following day if you want. It's great for knocking down a section of lawn for a flower garden or visa versa.
This is just the thing! I find this works wonderfully. You have to cut down the ivy and then brush this on the top of where you cut it. Bonide
