How can I make a trough in a rock floor?

I have a very old basement with a rock floor and my sump pump is in the east end but the water comes in at the stairs that are in the west end of the basement. What is the best way to cut a trough in the floor to make the water run smoothly and quickly to the sump pump without have it pool up all over the whole entire floor? Not sure whether to jack hammer a trough or someone told me to use a cement cutter??? Is there any suggestions?

this sounds like a job for someone with the right tools, etc. we had to jackhammer our basement floor to install a sewer ejector and it still took a pick ax, hammer and lots of back breaking work to get the opening we needed.

Hi Valerie, because this is inside your house, you are best off to call a professional in, they will know how to do what is necessary, sounds like you may need some grading outside the house, which you can do yourself

First I would check the west end to see if you can determine why the water is coming in. We had that happen and had professionals come in to install drain tiles. I think your first strategy would be to check the landscaping on the west side. It could be that the water is draining toward your house instead of away from the house. Sometimes that's all you need done. If that's not the problem, I'd highly recommend having at least 3 companies who do water proofing come look at your basement. You may get different ideas, but at least 2 of them should be the same. Of course, next comes the price. Once you know the problem and the price you can either call other companies for prices or chose from the ones who came. By making an appointment with 3 different companies, you will also be able to see who really follows up and compare prices. While you're waiting for them to come, do some research on the companies (or do it before you even call them). I use my search engine and type in "name of company reviews". Just remember that more people who had a problem will bother to write reviews.
You can also use homeadvisor.com which has local professionals or join the neighborhood group at nextdoor.com to ask your neighbors who they have used and who they like. Wishing you the best.
