How do I make homemade flea spray?

Need non-toxic flea killer for use in and around my home. I have two small dogs in the house. My brother's family has 7 dogs in the house.

Hi William. One of the easiest home remedies is to use warm water and dish soap. This way acts as flea traps. Place small dishes filled with warm water and dish soap around your house. Do this at night and change the water and soap solution every day.

This isn't a spray recipe, but in addition to that, you should do the following:

    • Wash or throw away all pet bedding.
    • Wash, steam treat, or throw away all area rugs
    • Vacuum or steam treat any furniture where your pets spend time
    • Vacuuming is a very important component of a flea control program. You should thoroughly vacuum the entire home prior to flea insecticide applications and you should continue to vacuum once every other day for at least 14 days. Vacuuming pulls fleas and eggs to the surface and also provides the stimulation the pupa (immature flea) need to exit their cocoons and expose themselves to the insecticides that have been applied.

  • Flea sprays are useless unless the flea issue is properly addressed.

I spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house once a month with white vinegar. It does help. Needs to be repeated after every rain event. I live where it hasn't rained since May. Different areas of the country are more prone to flea and tick infestations than others. I live where it is extremely dry (humidity about 13% today), so less of an issue for me. We have many pets including cats and dogs.

Vet told me to sprinkle borax on all soft surfaces, and leave for 3 hrs, then vacuum up. I use a glass jar with lots of holes in the lid, and 20 Mule Team Laundry Borax. It won't harm pets or you.

I also use my carpet cleaner regularly as the water and pet Zep Carpet Cleaning Solution kills the eggs which hatch every 9 days.

I also use Greenerways Bug Repellent thats organic non-toxic .... lemongrass oil, cedar oil, citronella oil. I get it on Amazon but some home stores carry it.
