What color should I paint the treads in my staircase?

The treads in my staircase are needing a new life. Right now the wood is a blonde light color. I still want to keep the risers white.

I would use a dark color to make the risers stand out. Dark brown, maybe?
You could select a color similar to your wall color, but either lighter or darker in intensity (to highlight your walls) or go totally opposite and pick a contrasting color that matches another item in your color scheme for a pop of color and visual interest.
You might consider using gel stain on your stairs rather than paint. Here's an example Robert!

I would contrast a dark stain on the tread with the white risers.
