Then you can choose to paint, or stain the table - or both!
Touch up the paint on the white and go 2 shades darker on the stain. Scuff with steel wool then clean with denatured alcohol. Then you are ready to being paint & stain. Seal with 3 coats of poly on the table top.

I'd go with the Chalk Paint idea. I'd paint the wood part one color and the white maybe black or the darker color. Pick out colors that go with the room it is in. After You are done with the painting I'd find or make some complimentary seat cushions, and maybe a matching small table runner. Be sure to follow the directions for the chalk paint waxing so your work will last a long time. Good Luck!
