How can we repair an ash-colored film on our walls?

This film appeared about a year after we painted the walls. It could have been there and we didn't notice because they were painted a bright yellow color prior. I wiped them down with only a wet rag (rinsing often) and it returned??

I would paint over it with a good primer like aroma free Kilz primer. Then paint it the color you want.

I agree with DesertRose. Has to be a reaction between the old paint and new paint. Wash them down. Prime with Kilz primer and repaint.

Agreed. The original paint could have been oil based. If the paint is very old it could have lead in it which might also react. Primer first then repainting should do the trick

    Hi Koo,

I agree with the others. The best thing to do is to prime it with a separate primer then repaint. I personally like Kilz or Zinsser BIN. Wishing you the best.
