Hi Effie, here's a tutorial that will help you get the paint off the bricks - https://www.wagnerspraytech.com/projects/how-to-remove-paint-from-brick/
Wire brush. For those "impossible" spots you can touch up with a tiny bit of paint to match.
Fuzzy roller and a brush . basically a heavily textured wall. Good luck.
Effie: I painted by brick fireplace. !. PRIME! 2. Paint with a GOOD latex paint! (see photo)
I painted our rock fireplace, so I think brick would be similar.
You need to dust/clean the bricks (I used a vacuum), prime, and paint. Use a nappy roller and a brush for tricky spots and corners. It may take a few coats of paint depending on how much of the red shows through. But it will look great when you're finished.
Also, here's a tutorial to whitewash the brick, if you don't want a super solid coat of paint - https://farmfreshvintagefinds.com/painting-brick-with-debis-diy-chalk-type-paint/
