How do I use real pine tree branches?

I usually buy the fake pine tree branches and other garland at Michael's to use in my crafts but I recently was given some real pine tree branches with little pine cones on them. My question is; do I have to spray them with anything before I use them in my crafts so they don't eventually start rotting or dying? Is there anything I should use to spray them with to preserve them first?

You can extend the life of your pine branches by carefully choosing and cutting branches and using a protective spray.
Place the stems in water and keep them in a cool location until ready to use them in the wreath.
Remove pine seeds from the cones and spray the entire branch evenly with shellac or hairspray. The spray will make the branches shiny and hold moisture in, extending the life and color of needles and cones.
Most people bake pinecones before using for crafts/décor to kill anything living on/in it. Here's a post from another Hometalker who used real pine tree branches in her home.

I've been looking for the same thing. I found Anti-Desiccant Spray "Wilt Stop" on Amazon. Reviews say it works on wreaths for a month or two. I've also heard that hairspray will do the same for a lot less money but I haven't tried either one.
