How can I paint or repair my brick wall?

I have a brick wall in my attic and its old it keeps chipping off parts of little stone..i love it but what can i do to paint over it or even go in between the bricks...please help

Does the wall serve any actual purpose (other than decorative?) If it is a chimney it should be repointed.
