A real brick fireplace? As in wood burning with a chimney?

Paint vs Clean vs Replace - those are very different processes.

A gas insert, as in natural gas or propane tanks or ?

Brush off bricks as best you can and white wash. It leaves a very nice look.

My red brick fireplace was whitewashed by the previous owner and it looked pink to me and I painted over it.

If diluting latex paint to “white wash” the brick, I would use a light gray or light tan - depending on what your color palette is, in the room.

I would dilute it 50% with water

I would use a “dry brush” method for the application. Meaning don’t load the brush with a lot of wash.
