Google and YouTube can give you a wealth of ideas. In addition, buy whatever you can afford in the way of tools and equipment to make jobs easier. Good items to have for a novice are spade shovel, rakes, kneeling pad, pruning shears, etc. Either a wheel barrow, or even better, a 4-wheel lawn cart will be extremely handy and save you a lot of carrying heavy plants, bushes, fertilizer, etc. from the car to the yard. Happy landscaping!

For some heavy lifting maybe you could enlist a teenager for help. A pizza and soda works wonders.

Have you looked online and have ideas as to how you would like it to look? Draw it out on paper to use as a guide. This will help you in finding material. Remember, that it will be completed in phases over time. When shopping, always keep an eye out for deals on material/plants that fit into your plan. If by chance, you have a riding lawnmower, I suggest looking into a cart for it. This will save your back! This Old House is a really good resource!
