Hello! Have you considered Chalk paint?
I favor the Rustoleum products, their products and support are fabulous. Perhaps it might be available in a color —that you like?
Heres some helpful links, I hope this helps!
Buy wood stripper liquid (at hardware store),do this outside, for fresh air! Follow directions on can of paint stripper. When all the old paint is removed from project piece, you can repaint it whatever color you want. Or just stain and seal it. I would have a piece of glass cut for the top to protect your new piece. Don't forget to buy new drawer pulls, if you need them.
I agree with Vicki. Strip the old paint off and then you can decide whether you want to stain, it or paint it. If you paint make sure to use primer then paint. I also like the idea of cutting a piece of glass for the top.
Strip the old paint and repaint, but also remove the lower drawer and replace with a flat keyboard drawer to make it a perfect small computer/homework desk.
The top looks like a piece of melamine shelf board. Remove that before you strip the paint. Give it a light sanding to remove scratches and (rust?) and see what you've got. Once you're certain HOW you want to use this - then select your finish to fit your purpose. You could go two-tone or mono for any finish: metallic spray paint, chalk paint, acrylic, stain with polyurethane, something fancy with resin or unicorn spit. The only way to limit the options is to rule stuff out that doesn't go with your decor.
Since the current finish is rough so I would strip with CitriStrip or similar. It might even entail some sanding.
Then clean with mineral spirits.
After that, you can either stain or paint.
I decided to use dark wax on top and leave it. What do y’all think? Yah or nah
