How do I repair the door hardware in my new house?

The previous owners had no knobs and where the notch (?) goes into the door frame is all gouged out. Where do I start?

A picture would help.
A very large drill bit and an oversized strike plate should do it.
The drill bit is to clean up the hole and the large strike plate should cover up the gouges.
If the gouges are really extensive, wood putty, sand paper & marching paint or stain will fix that.
