How can I repair worn leather?

My brown leather sofa is worn from years of use; what is a cost effective to repair it? As you can see in the picture, my husband thought it a good idea to paint the area...

If it is Genuine Hide, then a Leather Stain or a Leather Rejuvenating Polish which has colour might do the trick or Saddle Soap. Best of luck!
I have used paste shoe polish in a tin to disguise areas like this! I applied the shoe polish and then buffed it well. It is a temporary fix however and I had to keep doing it every month or so before I eventually replaced my couch.
