I think it depends on what part of the country/world you live in. Since we live in Maine with snowy Christmases, I have traditional decorating with greens (fresh or artificial) on the mantelpiece around the front door (outside) around the porch pillars etc. I used red plaid fabric for a tablecloth and had green china dishes. The mantel display is always a big part of Christmas decorations. This year, since we have a new bench for our front porch I may wrap up some large cardboard boxes, as if they were from Santa Claus. Some past Xmas projects, a tree skirt, a candy house, Quilted Xmas cards, a Snow Queens dining room, presents with no ribbons or tags, just pics of recipients.

Choose a theme or a color.
Wreath is a must for me.
Biggest impact is a decorated dining table.
Some years, I have had a theme in each room (Barbie, Angels, Santa, Snowman).
