I have oak dining table and chairs that need help. How to restore to a gray color. I live in the country. Thanks
Hi Rose, if its been painted you may have to strip it and sand it down first. You can purchase gray as well as white wash stains now that I've seen work great!
If it's in good shape and you are going to paint over it, you can clean with denatured alcohol after scuffing the paint with steel wool. Then prime and paint.
If there is a shiny finish, it will need to be removed.
Hello Rose: I use CitriStrip. I use a plastic putty knife to strip the paint once it's ready to be removed. I clean the crevices and fancy work with a toothbrush. This stuff is really nice and works on horizontal and vertical surfaces.
As for getting a gray look, check these sites:
If you are planning to paint it, you might want to consider chalk paint. It requires no priming and is very easy to work with.
