How do I get the sanding scratches out of acacia wood countertops?
We have acacia wood countertops and I did a dumb thing I stained them and left the stain on them without wiping it off and so I had to sand off all the stain I left on them. I then restained them with three coats of hardwax oil and I can see a ton of tiny wispy scratches almost all over the counter! I am not sure how to get rid of the scratches...Can anyone help me??
If the scratches are not the wood itself crazing from deterioration, you would need to sand it down using sandpapers starting with a lower grit (80 - 380) to a higher grit (600-1500) to get it smooth.
Take a good photo to the paint dept. of your home improvement store and ask their sales pros for advice. They have products/methods you may not have thought of.
You should have sanded with progressively coarse to fine sandpaper. I usually start with 80 grit, 100 grit, 150 grit, 220 grit, then use a maroon (purple) sanding pad. At this point what you can try in a small area first is use a purple sanding pad going with the grain. Wipe off the the sanding dust and use a damp cloth over the area to mimic a finish coat and see if the scratches are gone. If they are then proceed to sand the whole countertop. Then put down a coat of the hardwax oil.
Thanks very much William however I think it is too late for that as I have already put three coats of hardwax oil on it! I did not realize that I had to even sand it as it came from the manufacturer already pre oiled with hardwax oil. I was trying to get a certain color so I mixed the hardwax oil with minwax oil to achieve the color I wanted. When it was done the first time around I realized I totally did the staining wrong so I actually sanded it all off and that is when I got all the scratches....really upset about it but was not sure if I could fix it. Do you know if I put a clear coat of oil on it will it remove any of the scratches??
I doubt a clear coat of oil would fix it. You can try in a small area. If the scratches are very fine they may get filled in.
That is what I was afraid of! thanks for your help William!
OK so I'm new here too, Ivw just bought a second hand TV unit but has some scratches my plan was sand it all, then vanish it with new paint and wax it after. Please advise what to do as I don't want to ruin it thank you
