How do I clean a chrome soap dispenser lid?

Any thoughts on how to get the gunk off a chrome lid to a liquid hand soap dispenser? This is more than just soap build up. I think there is actually corrosion going on.

I would try vinegar.
Alcohol cleans chrome very well.
If vinegar didn't work then nothing will. The chrome finish is probably wearing off.
