Hi Betsy I use a plastic bag half filled with vinegar and secure it with a rubber band around the shower head. I leave it over night and it works great!

Put some white vinegar in a plastic bag-estimating the amount to cover the shower head, be sure it is sturdy enough, like a ziploc, and does not leak. If your shower head is not detachable you can tie the bag of vinegar around the shower head, keeping the jets in the vinegar. If your shower head is detachable, bring it down to where you can easily do the same procedure. Soak for at least an hour.
If vinegar doesn't work try CLR in a bag.
