How can I make a basic toddler-proof nativity scene for a toddler?
My 18 mo old grandson has not been exposed to the Christian side of Christmas... just the Santa & presents side.I'd like to make a basic 'introductory' nativity project to introduce the concept and still not make it too 'over-board' for his non-church going parents. He is a toddler so I want it to be fun, instructional and toddler proof. Is it impossible? Any ideas would be geat! TIA

Hi Cindy,
18 months seems a bit young for this much information, let alone an understanding of the meaning of a nativity scene. As bright and as beautiful your toddler is , they are just beginning life and are a blank slate at birth, discovering and learning every day. Basic daily things are challenges and met with excitement and frustration. You have good intentions, maybe next year he would have a better grasp and be capable of appreciating what you'd like to share, that would be a better opportunity.
Best to you.

I think the most important thing for a toddler would be to make the Nativity characters so they can be handled and played with. Another idea would be to go to a local thrift store and see if there is any inexpensive Nativity items you could purchase so they can be handled by a young child and it wouldn't matter so much if things got broken. 18 month old children are DEFINITELY hands on!
My daughter had a plushie nativity as a baby and we still put it out 25 years later. I would go with just Mary Joseph baby and maybe a donkey. If that goes over well, add shepherd sheep. Then angel and wise men.
Fisher Price makes an adorable Nativity Playset that an 18 month might love to play with for a few years! $25.00. Can be found on Amazon. There are several listed but there is one for 25.00. If you type in Fisher Price Little People Nativity you should be able to get right to it! I think this is ADORABLE and I might buy it for a 2 year old I know!
