Mineral spirits to remove lacquer. Then you can strip to go lighter or paint.

Clean and paint.
Take one of the cabinet doors to your paint store and ask for their advice on materials and application methods. They have tricks you may have never thought of.
You can clean them thoroughly, prime them, and then paint them.
