Can I put polyurethane over fabric for covering a sewing table?

Has anyone ever put polyurethane over fabric? I just designed and husband and I built window sewing table convertible to window bench and I would like the table top to be really durable and still match the surrounding decor. Planning to use white duck on kitchen cabinet tops that form end pieces so they could be covered with fabric as well. I suppose I could just test but I want to know how it stands up to sewing machines, scissors, pins and other crafting tools.Any ideas?

You can put poly over fabric to make it waterproof and repel stains. People who make their own floor mats protect them with poly. I think you could use a large rotary cutting mat under your sewing machine or do your craft work on that. Another idea might be a carpet protector that is normally used under a rolling desk chair on carpet. Both come in different sizes and prices. That would probably wear better for your sewing pins, scissors, and crafting tools and can easily be slipped into a closet while not in use.
