How do I know which parts I need to buy to fix my toilet?

My commode will not stop letting the water leak out, and various things have been tried, so if I buy the entire gut on the inside of the commode what do I go by name of commode or what? One size fit all. I don't know. Help me figure this out.

I usually stick with the brand name.
  • Hi, Dorene!

A universal toilet repair kit is available at most home improvement stores. They work with virtually any brand (check the label on the box) and are easy to install! I hope this helps!

You should be able to find the parts you need at any hardware store. Take pictures of the parts you are replacing, or take them with you, and it will make it much easier.

Where is it leaking from? around the base - buy a new wax ring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUIW4Rqvz-M

Leaking from the base of the tank where the plug is? where the bolts are? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUl3duqRUkw

There are a million videos on YouTube for every toliet repair.

If the toliet is running continually, you may need to replace the flapper, or simply tighten the handle, or adjust the water level in the tank using the adjustment screw

My toliet tank had a hairline crack..... so I had to get a whole new toliet $125 at the lumber store

Where is it leaking from? Replacing the insides may not be the problem. If it leaks from the base you just need a new wax ring. If it won't stop running you just need a new flapper. If it's leaking between the tank and toilet you just need a tank gasket.
