Hi Sheryl, Are you looking to restain your piece? It not, you don't need to strip it before painting. You can use a paint like Annie Sloan and it will adhere to what is already on the buffet.

Try Citristrip. It's safe for indoor use.

I agree with the Citristrip, it is by far the less toxic smelling and easiest thing to use. You can check out my post here where I talk about it:

Citristrip is a good product that is mild. Make sure you work in small sections going with the wood grain. After removed, lightly sand and clean.
