Spray gives the best "smooth" results. I like to use a durable paint for things like bedroom furniture that gets a lot of bumps.

I would suggest a gloss or semi-gloss paint and sprayer too.

Spray paint or use a paint sprayer with oil based paint.

If you use a spray paint you will have to prime first. You can also use chalk paint. You would not have to prime first. I painted a sleigh bed headboard and footboard for my 4 year granddaughter with charcoal gray Rustoleum Chalked Paint (one version/brand of chalk paint) and finished it with a clear wax. It looks very nice and has worn well. It's been 2 years. Rustoleum does offer their "chalked" paint in a spray can. I have had very good luck with it EXCEPT you MUST also use their clear poly spray over the paint unless you chose you to a clear wax as a topcoat over the chalk paint. Any other kind of clear poly spray will cause that paint to bubble and peel. Trust me--I have tried various times to use a different brand of clear sealer over that paint and it doesn't work well unless you don't mind a more distressed looking piece of furniture.
