First, you screw cement board to the wall. Then affix the tile to the cement board with an adhesive specific for this type of job. I would recommend the pre-mixed. To make sure they don't slide, use painter's tape or some small screws to hold in place until dry. Use spacers to make sure they are evenly placed. Once the adhesive is dry (make sure you wipe excess before it dries), then you grout. When grout is dry, seal.

  • Hi, Angella!

Tiles can also be applied directly to the wall provided that the wall is clean and in good shape. An easy product to use is Simple Mat, which takes the place of the mastic. The tile can be grouted right away where if mastic is used, the mastic has to dry for a day or so before grouting. I hope this helps!

I agree with Cher. I used simple mat to put up a tile backsplash in my kitchen over my stove. There was wallpaper on the wall so I cut a square where the backsplash would be and removed the wallpaper. You definitely want to make sure you have a clean smooth dry surface. Do not try using it over wallpaper because it could pull the paper off the wall.
