Here's good idea! It takes a round curtain rod and two brackets (maybe 3 to hold any weight). You could use S hooks to hang the stockings. You could possibly use Command hooks to hold the rod and EMPTY stockings for display. If you put heavy things in the stockings as gifts I am not sure that Command hooks would hold the weight--possibly if you used numerous Command hooks.
We always have heavy stockings, due to all the goodies. If you are only hanging empty ones, a command hook will work. If they are going to be heavy, a permant hook for each stocking is one possibility (single coat hooks work) or you could use weighted stocking holders, which sit on the mantel and hold the stocking.

Command hooks come in various sizes and strengths..
Do you have a wood mantel? If so, mount discreet hooks underneath where you won't see them.
I've been looking at weighted hangers, I think the cost will be worth it in the long run.
