How can I clean a top-loading washing machine?

I have a top load he washer and I am trying to clean the top if the inside of the washer. It looks like lint may be clogged in there. Seeing as it doesn't fill to the top with water because it is HE I'm having a difficult time getting it clean. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do you have a setting on your washer to run a cleaning cycle? Mine is called "refresh".

Are you referring to the drum of the washer? If so, I am having a hard time figuring out how lint could get above the water level, perhaps it's detergent residue? No matter. I would break out the vacuum with the brush attachment to get the bulk of it. You don't want it to clog the drain. Then use use a stiff brush and vacuum out what falls in the drum. Wipe with vinegar until it's clean.

You may want to use less detergent or, if using powder, switch to a liquid. That may prevent future problems.

Baking soda dissolves pretty readily, I don't think that's the problem. I have a front loader so don't know how your detergent is dispensed. Could it be a problem with it washing the detergent onto the top portion of the drum? I do know fabric softener will make things gloopy. I don't use it, just vinegar in the rinse cycle and have never had a problem with my machine getting stinky like so many others have had. My son's mechanic uniforms are the only thing that requires a longer cycle, they are so gross, lol. The machine is clean even after his greasy stuff is done.

Thank you. I do use baking soda in alot of my loads, guess it may be that as well?
